More Than 200 Families Homeless | Land Portal

Settlers at 9-Mile quarry celebrated in style and colour after receiving their long awaited land titles from Prime Minister James Marape and National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop yesterday. However, this did not go down well with more 200 families who had lost their land to an access road into the quarry. Those settlers who were living at the entrance of the quarry lost their land while those at the back celebrated with Mr Marape and NCD Governor Parkop. MP for Moresby Northeast, John Kaupa, said the settlement to suburb concept was his initiative, one of his campaign policies, that NCDC has taken on board. Mr Kaupa said his administration has a team to survey the land because these areas are occupied by settlers and they should be given enough time to align themselves. “Such leaders are needed to deliver to the people, and now people can really see the work complete with the launching of the settlement to suburb program where people can have land titles now,” Mr Kaupa said. Technical adviser for the Settlement to Suburb program for Moresby Northeast, Moken Samuel, said that the district plan is to make both parties happy when such development comes into the settlements. Mr Samuel said that over the years, successive governments had forgotten such initiatives but when Mr Kaupa came into oce in 2017, this initiative of converting settlements into suburbs was his rst project. “NCDC is giving the land title to the people, which means that they are giving values, therefore all stakeholders need to be in partnership to make this a success,” Mr Samuel said. He said converting settlements into suburbs also creates more space which will pave the way for more services into the city. Mr Kaupa said some settlements have been nominated and soon they will be given their titles, and they include: 1.9-Mile quarry (launched) 2.9-Mile Cemetary 3.Morobe Block 4.8-Mile 5.ATS 6.Sai Wara 7.Kipo 8.Burns Peak 9.Naukua Mr Kaupa was not happy when he saw the 200 plus families whose homes were displaced by the access road into the settlement. “NCDC should have given enough time to these people to be align themselves before coming in with machines because after all you are creating a problem again. “The following settlements in my electorate will be given their titles but will be done making sure all people are satisfy and will not demolish but will upgrade,” Mr Kaupa said. He urged NCDC to consider a better alternative to settle the 200 plus families urgently because these families are in dire need of assistance.
