An important outcome of the 1972 UN Summit on Environment in Stockholm, Sweden, was the agreement between Kenya and Sweden to cooperate on soil conservation. As a result, the Kenya National Soil and Water Conservation Programme started in 1974 under the Ministry of Agriculture, with support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency(Sida). In 1982, Sida established the Regional Soil Conservation Unit (RSCU) to disseminate soil and water conservation experiences in Kenya to other Countries in the region.

We have over 95 years of experience in empowering communities to overcome poverty.  Led by our founder Dr. Y.C. James Yen, since early 1920s, our predecessor the Chinese Mass Education Movement was responsible for changing, for better, and the lives of over 200 million Chinese peasants through the power of functional literacy.  Since IIRR was formally organized as an international development, training, and research organization in 1960 in the Philippines, we have continued to empower the rural poor to end poverty in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

    Our Vision

To become a platform for academic professionals to share ideas, country experiences, plans and ways to improve land administration training/education in Eastern Africa, among other land related issues of regional concern.

    Our Strategy

Promoting and improving Land Administration Education/Training and Research in the Eastern Africa region through collaboration with academic partners

The Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) is an intergovernmental partnership of 10 Nile Basin countries, namely Burundi, DR Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, The Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. Eritrea participates as an observer.

For the first time in the Basin's history, an all-inclusive basin-wide institution was established, on 22nd February, 1999, to provide a forum for consultation and coordination among the Basin States for the sustainable management and development of the shared Nile Basin water and related resources for win-win benefits.

Kenya hosts a wealth of data and information on its biodiversity and natural resources however the vast majority of these information is scattered across various institutions, with that do not lend themselves to sharing and integration. This hampers any efforts to give consolidated access to the information for purposes of further analysis and dissemination. This portal is an open access platform, hosting and supporting data generated from the Kenya’s Natural Capital- Biodiversity Atlas (2015).
