The winners have been identified of a £3.65m Challenge Fund funded through DFID’s LEGEND (Land-Enhancing Governance for Economic Development) umbrella programme, to drive innovative and responsible investments in land, in particular agriculture. The fund, managed by KPMG LLP, seeks to improve the effects of land investments on communities in sub-Saharan Africa.

Sierra Leone has a severe and complicated relationship with rice, exacerbated by its reliance on an obsolete land tenure system.

Landowning families in Imperi and Jong Chiefdoms, Bonthe District in southern Sierra Leone have commenced legal action in the country’s High Court against African Lion Agriculture Limited (ALA) and Carmanor (SL) Limited to recover possession of around 2303 acres of land.
