Bananas (Musa spp.) belong to the most important global food commodities, and their cultivation represents the world's largest monoculture. Although the plant-associated microbiome has substantial influence on plant growth and health, there is a lack of knowledge of the banana microbiome and its influencing factors.

The thesis explores the extent to which payment for the ecosystem service of carbon sequestration

provided in a value chain context, through an innovative climate change mitigation and adaptation

strategy known as 'carbon insetting', could generate 'win-win' outcomes for all actors.

The analysis focuses on Argentina, but draws on examples from throughout Latin America for a regional perspective and from the provinces of Jujuy, Cordoba and Santiago del Estero for subnational views.
