The following Interview was conducted by a community member trained by KHRG to monitor local human rights conditions.
Kenya’s Vision 2030 aims at transforming the country into a newly industrialized middle income country
and infrastructural development is high on the agenda to achieve this. Competing land uses and existing
interests in land make the use of eminent domain by government in acquiring land inevitable. However
Land is one of the terrains of struggle for most rural women in Africa because of its importance in sustaining rural livelihoods, and social-cultural and geopolitical factors that hinder women from enjoying land rights. Even when there are progressive land laws, as it is for Tanzania, women have not really enjoyed their rights.

For a dam to successfully contribute to the sustainable development of the society, the local populations should also benefit from it.
This synthesis of our findings from an investigation of tenure risk in East, West, and Southern Africa, shows that a majority of tenure disputes are caused by the displacement of local peoples, indicating that companies and investors are not doing enough to understand competing claims to the land they acquire or lease.
