The incentives for, limitations to, and contradictions inherent in these collaborations are examined.

Civil war and violence often force large numbers of people to leave their lands. Multiple waves of displacement and (partial) return generate complex overlapping claims that are not easily solved. As people return to their regions of origin—sometimes after decades—they tend to find their land occupied by other settlers, some of whom hold legal entitlements.

In current literature, certain scholars have stressed the role of the private sector in the process of revitalizing agriculture through agribusiness-led development. Others have underlined the global risks of poorly negotiated land acquisitions that disadvantage farmers and of nontransparent trade arrangements that create suspicion within local communities.

5.4 millions d’hectares de terres sont liés à des investisseurs étrangers. La superficie moyenne des terres conclues est 148 992 ha. La foresterie apporte le plus grand nombre de transactions et la plus grande taille sous contrat. La majorité des transactions conclues sont enregistrées bail, est valable pour une période de 25 ans.
